Carlos Castaneda is no longer as popular as he was when his Don Juan books were first published beginning in 1968。 Unfortunately， their author lived long enough to have his honesty questioned。 There was no Don Juan Matus， people said。 They added that there is not a single word from the Yaqui language in any of the books。 Then I would add that no self-respecting shaman would allow a college boy to go on a bunch of guided drug trips with him， especially as the college boy specified which drugs he Carlos Castaneda is no longer as popular as he was when his Don Juan books were first published beginning in 1968。 Unfortunately， their author lived long enough to have his honesty questioned。 There was no Don Juan Matus， people said。 They added that there is not a single word from the Yaqui language in any of the books。 Then I would add that no self-respecting shaman would allow a college boy to go on a bunch of guided drug trips with him， especially as the college boy specified which drugs he wanted to take。Now that half a century has passed by， I would like to quote a well-known tale about the man who is being psychoanalyzed by a famous doctor。 He describes in great detail a number of oddly unbelievable facts。 After each one， the doctor nods and says， "That's very interesting。" Irritated， the patient says that he invented all the tales he told。 The doctor nods again and says， "That's even MORE interesting。"I feel that way about The teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui way of knowledge。 Castaneda describes his trips on peyote （mescalito）， datura （devil weed）， and psilocybin （humito） in gorgeous detail。 When I was younger， I believed in every word that Castaneda wrote。 Now， I see the work as a splendid work of fiction。 The only problem are the academic outlines that form the last third of the book， in which Castaneda tried to hoodwink his professors by being as methodical as they pretended to be。Later on， I will re-read some of the later works in the series to see how they've stood up to the test of time。 。。。more

Yea， so that was a trippy book。 Literally。 Half of the book is Carlos describing his psychedelic trips on different plants that Juan told him to ingest。 But for some strange reason， it was really interesting to me。 It’s probably good that some of these old Yaqui ways are recorded in tuits book。 It’s sad how much information we’ve lost about different American continent cultures。

I read this book in 1970， living in Haight Ashbury San Francisco and absolutely loved it。 Probably something to do with my age and location - I had travelled from Australia in a very roundabout way。 Not sure what I would think of it today？Definitely worth a read whether you treat it seriously or as pure fantasy。
